How the new 2020 postal rates will impact marketing mail

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is planning to change mail rates as of January 26, 2020.

The USPS has stated that the increases “will keep the Postal Service competitive while providing the agency with needed revenue.” In its fourth quarter financial statement, the USPS announced it ran a deficit in FY2019 of $8.8 billion. With thirteen years of continuous losses, the cumulative USPS deficit is now $77.8 billion.

Postal volumes declined by a total of 2.9% in 2019, the majority coming from the eroding First Class Mail category. There was an increase of 0.3% in the package delivery category, but not nearly enough to offset the overall decline.

The 2020 rate increase will not affect domestic retail postage prices such as first class letters (55 cents), metered letters (50 cents), flats ($1.00), postcards (35 cents) and additional ounces letters (15 cents). The outbound international letter rate will go up by 5 cents from $1.15 to $1.20.

Meanwhile, priority Mail envelopes and boxes will increase between 3.5% (Express) and 4.1% (Standard).
